While Northern Kentucky has its share of top assets – great job opportunities, affordable living options, incredible recreation – it offers one that few communities can compete with – a large collection of K-12 schools.

With nearly a dozen top-tier public school systems and nearly as many private and parochial schools from which to choose, families in Northern Kentucky can ensure their child receives the education that best fits their needs and career interests.

Preparing for Stellar Careers

Covington Independent Public Schools — one of the largest independent school districts in the state and the most diverse district in the region — boasts a robust career and technical education program that includes focuses in areas such as health sciences, IT, and construction and manufacturing technology.

Public Schools in Northern Kentucky

If public school is what you are looking for, the region contains a wide variety of options including larger county-wide districts in Boone, Campbell and Kenton Counties, as well as smaller independent districts in communities like Bellevue, Covington, Dayton, Erlanger, Fort Mitchell, Fort Thomas Ludlow, Newport and Walton-Verona. These institutions serve as a crucial resource for the area’s workforce, as they all work to help students develop the career skills they’ll need later in life, thus keeping the region’s talent pool filled.

“At Covington Public Schools, we recognize that the traditional four-year college degree track isn’t for everyone,” Superintendent Alvin Garrison told the Cincinnati Enquirer. “A great number of training opportunities, career paths and high-paying jobs are available for those who have been trained in high-demand workforce areas, such as advanced manufacturing, transportation and logistics, health care, information technology and construction.”

Excellent Education

Beechwood Independent School District and Fort Thomas Independent Schools were named the top two school districts in the state in 2022 by Niche.com, an online ranking site.

Like Covington, other public schools in the area offer programs to help students get a jump-start on their futures. Take Boone County Schools in Florence – it offers students a chance to earn college credit through its Early College partnerships with Northern Kentucky University, Thomas More University and Gateway Community & Technical College (GCTC). Students spend half their school day taking courses at the GCTC Florence/Union campus, and they can earn 24+ college credit hours in one year.

From programs and activities to services, each public school district in the region is ready to help students succeed now and down the road.

Private and Parochial Schools in Northern Kentucky

Public school options are just the beginning in Northern Kentucky. There’s the Ignite Institute in Erlanger, a learning community that offers a STEAM education and experience designed to equip students with in-demand skills.

The region also boasts a full array of private and parochial school options. The Diocese of Covington educates over 10,000 students throughout the region and includes a full array Montessori, K-8 and high schools.

Blessed Sacrament in Fort Mitchell and St. Henry in Erlanger were named 2021 National Blue Ribbon Schools by the U.S. Department of Education. This designation recognizes schools for their academic performance and ability to bridge the achievement gap.

Spend just one day in any of these private schools, and you’ll quickly find out why parents love them.

Troy Fedders

Troy Fedders, development director for the St. Elizabeth Foundation, and his family chose to send their children to St. Pius X Catholic School in Edgewood, another National Blue Ribbon School.

“Honestly, it just felt right,” he says. “We looked at several different schools and then decided that private education was best for our family. When we walked in, we could tell right away the administration cared. The school had way more technology in the building than we ever imagined for a private Catholic school, and we were just blown away with the advancements in technology and level of care that we received from the administration. Even the building itself was very well cared for.”

Fedders says the school offers students multiple opportunities to succeed both in and out of the classroom, from STEM-based projects to foreign language courses.

“They provide them with engaging real-world field trips and hands-on activities,” he says. “The more opportunities students are exposed to, their chances of success are substantially increased.”
