Huntsville is rich with educational opportunities – from traditional four-year schools and graduate degree programs to technology-training classes and nontraditional courses tailored to the individual.
A University With Influence
The University of Alabama-Huntsville is widely considered one of the top universities in the Southeast, with an enrollment of approximately 7,100 undergraduate and graduate students. The university offers baccalaureate and graduate degree programs through its five colleges and also boasts 17 independent research centers, laboratories and institutes. “The research at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, and its Ph.D. programs with concentrations in engineering and science, have made us nationally and internationally visible,” says Frank Franz, UAH president. “We have focused upon building strengths that reflect the needs and interests of the community that we serve. UAH is the result of the special character of Huntsville.”
Local schools make it easy for students of all ages to gain an education. Florida Institute of Technology at Redstone Arsenal, which offers graduate degrees and professional development programs in business and management, has many weekend, night and distance-learning courses. Snead State Community College also offers distance-learning opportunities and programs that include associate’s degrees, continuing education, and business and industry training.
And the Huntsville Center for Technology starts educating early with training open to students from all five Huntsville city high schools. Calhoun Community College attributes much of its recent growth to both its relatively low cost and the flexibility of its programs through telecourses and Web-based classes. The largest two-year college in Alabama, Calhoun has campuses in Huntsville/Cummings Research Park and Redstone Arsenal and provides associate’s degrees and career/certificate programs as well as business and industry training.
