Danbury residents are blessed with a regional hospital that has all but swept the annual HealthGrades ratings.

Danbury Hospital, the city’s largest private employer, ranks in the top 5 percent of U.S. hospitals for overall clinical excellence. The annual survey analyzes nearly 5,000 hospitals, and only 269 made the top 5 percent in the results released in January 2008.

In specialty areas, the hospital also ranked in the top 5 percent of hospitals nationwide for cardiac, stroke, pulmonary and gastrointestinal care. Danbury Hospital received a five-star rating, HealthGrades’ highest, in 17 of 27 areas examined, surpassing any Connecticut hospital and most hospitals nationwide.
In 2005, hospital-ranking agency Solucient put Danbury, a teaching hospital with 120 years in the community, among its 100 Top Hospitals for better patient safety, shorter stays and lower death rates than its peers.
The Praxair Cancer Center at Danbury Hospital not only diagnoses and treats cancers but also takes part in several research studies. Clinical trials include those for breast, colorectal, gastric, gastroesophageal and lung cancers.
Older residents have many choices in Danbury for nursing homes and assisted living facilities. The Gardens is nothing short of gorgeous, with 50 private apartments in a home-like environment. Maplewood at Danbury, which specializes in memory loss, has a “Brain Gym” with computer-based programs tailored for its residents. Harborside Healthcare - Glen Crest is a retirement community with 49 apartments, offering weekly housekeeping and scheduled car service. It is next door to Harborside Health Care, should residents need skilled nursing home care.

It may be near one of the country’s wealthiest pockets, but Danbury also has services for patients with limited means. AmeriCares operates a free clinic on Main Street Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings; the Veterans Administration has an outpatient clinic on Germantown Road.
