Lauded by Midwest Living and the New York Times, the Iowa State Fair in nearby Des Moines is the quintessential summer fair and was named a Top 10 Summer Fair by Livability.com. About a million people come from far and wide each year to enjoy one of the world’s largest livestock shows and Iowa’s biggest art show.
Be sure to come to the fair hungry for fried foods. More than 600 exhibitors and concessionaires sell treats from decadent, like red velvet funnel cake, to the downright bizarre, such as fried butter on a stick.
Speaking of butter, the Iowa State Fair uses butter for more than deep frying. Each year, pure cream Iowa butter is used as a medium for sculpting. The main attraction is the Butter Cow, made of enough spread to slather over 19,000 pieces of toast. The buttery bovine is usually accompanied by companion works of art, and past years’ masterpieces include everything from John Wayne to Leonardo DaVinci’s The Last Supper.
