Downtown West Des Moines is an urban area mostly full of single-family homes with a few high rise apartments and attached homes. Most of the homes are historic, and a mixture of hip and trendy owners and renters fill the area.

While downtown residents are primarily young professionals, families with school-aged children also live downtown.

The neighborhood surrounding Hillside Elementary School features homes priced above the state's average. There are a few single-family homes, but most of the residents live in complexes or high-rise apartments.

Thanks to its proximity to the elementary school, this neighborhood is quiet and easy to walk around. Residents are well educated and run the gamut from young professionals to seniors.

The Commerce area of West Des Moines is full of single-family homes ranging from two to five bedrooms that are above the state and national average home prices. Many residents are highly educated and work in professional fields at the executive and managerial levels. However, college students, families and retirees also call the Commerce neighborhood home.
