Five hospitals, two universities are vital to the economy

Muncie is part of an East Central Indiana Regional Partnership group that markets the assets of 10 counties in that geographic sector of The Hoosier State, with a goal of bringing capital investment and new jobs to the entire region. Here are 10 current major employers in Muncie/East Central Indiana:

Ball State University

Shaffer Bell Tower (pictured above) is a landmark site in Muncie on the campus of Ball State University, commonly known as Ball State or BSU. The university will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2018, and today it has an enrollment of 20,000 students. BSU features six academic colleges that offer a total of 175 bachelor’s degrees.

Indiana University Health Ball Memorial Hospital

The only hospital in Muncie is Indiana University Health Ball Memorial Hospital, which has 3,000 employees and is near the campus of Ball State University. IU Health BMH was founded in 1929 and is affiliated with the Indiana University School of Medicine.

Reid Hospital & Health Care Services

Founded in 1905, Reid Hospital & Health Care Services oversees a 217-bed medical center in Richmond along with many satellite clinics in six Eastern Indiana counties, as well as two Western Ohio counties.

General Motors-Metal Fabricating

The General Motors-Metal Fabricating plant in Marion provides stampings and sheet metal assembly for cars, vans, trucks and SUVs built at GM assembly plants throughout North America. Founded in 1956, the Marion facility off of Interstate 69 employs more than 1,400 individuals on three full shifts.

Red Gold

In Elwood, about 1,350 Red Gold employees produce canned tomatoes and tomato-based products for supermarkets, club stores and foodservice industries throughout the United States. The company’s consumer brands include Red Gold, Redpack, Sacramento and Tuttorosso.

Marion General Hospital

Since 1896 and with 1,250 employees today, Marion General Hospital is a not-for-profit medical center that provides a variety of inpatient and outpatient health care services. Besides the main Marion center, MGH also has clinical facilities in the neighboring cities of Converse, Fairmount, Gas City, Swayzee and Upland.

Community Hospital Anderson

Serving Madison County and its surrounding region is Community Hospital Anderson, with the medical and surgical center celebrating its 55th anniversary in 2017. More than 1,200 employees work at the Anderson site, as well as Community Hospital’s nursing homes, an outpatient rehabilitation center and a mental health center.

Indiana Wesleyan University

In Marion is Indiana Wesleyan University, which offers 87 undergraduate majors and professional educational programs. Its three colleges are the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Graduate Studies and the College of Adult and Professional Studies. The university employs more than 1,000 staffers.

Pendleton Correctional Facility

Formerly known as the Indiana Reformatory, Pendleton Correctional Facility is a state prison near Pendleton in Madison County that offers maximum and minimum security housing for adult males over 22 years old. The prison averages 1,650 inmates, and there are 1,000 employees.

Richard L. Roudebush Indianapolis VA Medical Center

Serving Indiana veterans since 1932, the Richard L. Roudebush Indianapolis Veterans Administration Medical Center assists military personnel who live in Marion, as well as Fort Wayne and nearby Danville, Ill. Services include surgery, psychiatric care, neurological care, rehabilitation sessions and more.
