Fayette County Public Schools
Fayette County Public Schools educates roughly 40,000 students from Kindergarten through 12th grade in the Lexington area. Students have several options that cater to their strengths and interests, such as advanced programs and magnet schools. High school students can also enroll in specialized programs such as the Academy of Information Technology at Bryan Station High School, Pre-Engineering Program at Lafayette High School, International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme at Tates Creek High School, or the Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps at Bryan Station and Henry Clay.
Lexington has several private school options including Catholic, Montessori and nondenominational. For example, Sayre School and Trinity Christian Academy enroll students in K-12, while Lexington Catholic High School serves grades 9-12, The Lexington School grades K-6 and Providence Montessori School grades K-6.
Colleges and Universities
The University of Kentucky is home to 16 colleges as well as a graduate school. Its current enrollment includes more than 19,000 undergraduates who enjoy 93 undergrad programs. The University was founded in 1856 as the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Kentucky, and it still enjoys a large and thriving College of Agriculture.
Sports are a big draw to the campus with the NCAA Champions the Wildcats in men's basketball and strong softball, baseball and tennis programs available. UK is the highest ranked research university in the state, according to U.S. News and World Report.
Bluegrass Community and Technical College is a two-year institution offering daytime, night and weekend classes at six different campuses.
Transylvania University is a liberal arts college located in downtown Lexington. Students enjoy small class sizes with an average class of just 17 per class.
