Whether it’s learning area history, appreciating local art or attending a festival, it’s easy to find culture in Scott County. While adults and children alike enjoy the area’s many options for creative activities, there are also several opportunities especially for children and teens, such as a summer reading program and teen center.

Art and History

Those hoping to learn more about the history of the area will enjoy the Scott County Historical Museum. In addition to exhibits inside the museum, including those dedicated to former U.S. Secretary of Commerce and Shakopee native Maurice Stans, there are also a few off-site exhibits. The museum offers field trips and guided tours as well as Kids Kraft, a hands-on crafts program for kids.

Art enthusiasts will love the Scott County Art Crawl, presented by the Savage Arts Council. The crawl covers 20 miles, with stops in urban and rural parts of Scott County. Participants can meet 25 local artists, tour art studios and purchase paintings, photography, sculpture, glass art, pottery, jewelry and more.

Festivals

Several festivals are held each year in Scott County. The International Festival in Shakopee each summer features multicultural food, exhibits and entertainment. Dan Patch Days in Savage takes place in June, as does Fire Rescue Days in the city of Elko New Market. Dozinky Days, a Czech festival in New Prague, and Heimatfest, a German festival in Jordan, are held in September. Lakefront Days in Prior Lake is in August, and BBQ Days in Belle Plaine is in July.

Live Theater

DalekoArts (pronounced DELL-uh-koh) brings together professional artists to create ensemble-based live performances in and around New Prague. This not-for-profit group is committed to being a positive force for high-quality theatrical and arts education in underserved areas of Minnesota.

Known for its dedication to bringing generations of theater enthusiasts together, The Generations Theatre promotes acting opportunities for children. Family-oriented, live productions are geared towards inspiring the community, as well as raising awareness of the benefits of the theater and how it can be passed on to each generation.

The Curtain Call Theatre in New Prague features a variety of productions. Musicals are usually featured during the summer, while dramas, comedies and other theatrical genres are presented in the fall. The dinner theater has become a special highlight during the winter, featuring comedy served with a meal.

The Prior Lake Players and River Valley Theatre promote community involvement throughout Scott County, inspiring residents with live performances.
