The city of St. Louis, one of our picks for Best Beer Cities, has plenty of brews that pair well with those warm spring days that finish cool and crisp. If you’re looking for the perfect beer to enjoy a spring activity, look no further.

The Beer: German Wheat

The Brewery: Civil Life Brewing Company

A classic Hefeweizen, this is among the easiest beers to drink, delivering a light, refreshing taste with notes of banana, clove and black pepper, and hints of lemongrass and orange blossom honey. It’s perfect for drinking after a vigorous bike ride or while playing croquet.

The Beer: Saison De Lis

The Brewery: Perennial Artisan Ales

Brewed with chamomile flowers, this straw-colored Belgian-style Saison packs a refreshing finish that’s equal parts dry and tart. Fermented with a traditional saison yeasts gives this beer notes of fruit and spice that play nice with the tea-like quality of the chamomile. The Saison De Lis goes well with viewing sunsets in sweatshirts.

The Beer: Opal

The Brewery: Urban Chestnut Brewing Co.

Using German Opal hops gives this pilsner a floral finish with notes of citrus, pear and jackfruit. At 6.2 percent ABV, it packs a punch but goes down surprisingly smooth. Not too hoppy, the Opal quenches a strong thirst after spring time play. This one is best enjoyed sitting on a deck while planning out the next day’s landscaping project.

The Beer: Contact High

The Brewery: 4 Hands Brewery

As the name implies, Contact High is a brew fit for a spring day buzz. Pacific northwest hops provide a fresh, orange zest flavor that matches its color. A strong inhale draws a citrus aroma that clings to the nostrils. It’s a great beer to bring to a cookout or anywhere you might get a case of the munchies.

The Beer: Virgin Territory

The Brewery: Morgan Street Brewery

This IPA, the first brewed by MSB, is loaded with hops, offering note of mango and citrus with a copper orange color. There’s a creamy quality to the brew that hints at caramel malt and touches of spice. It finishes dry, as do most IPAs. Drink this while watching a baseball game on the back porch with good friends.

The Beer: Double IPA

The Brewery: Six Row Brewing Co.

At 8.5 percent ABV, this extra hoppy IPA is likely to be a one-and-done for those planning to do anything but sitting and shooting the breeze. But its floral scents, piney taste and herbal aromas will have you doing a double-take. Remember to go easy on this one, which is best shared by a pair of beer lovers reminiscing about the spring breaks of long ago.

The Beer: Belgian Golden Ale

The Brewery: Saint Louis Brewery (Schlafly)

The bubbly, zesty bouquet of this yellow ale envelops an especially light malty flavor that dances across taste buds thanks to crisp carbonation. With hints of ripe banana, pineapple and clove, the Golden Ale provides a refreshing and sweet finish. Best enjoyed while walking barefoot through a flower garden.
