Columbus boasts some of the best bass fishing in the South, thanks to the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway. The Tenn-Tom, as it is most often referred to, winds more than 200 miles through the states of Mississippi and Alabama, offering just about everything a water enthusiast could want. Besides fishing, the waterway offers a variety of other recreation opportunities that include hiking, fishing, boating, camping and bird watching. Columbus and Lowndes County are considered the midpoint of the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway, and here is where Hernando de Soto and a band of 1,000 men crossed in 1541 en route from Florida to the Mississippi River.
