Schools, local governments account for many jobs

UNC Chapel Hill

School districts, local governments and health care providers are major employers in the Carrboro-Chapel Hill region, while Aramark Food & Support Services is also a key contributor to the economy.

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Many Carrboro residents are among the thousands of employees who work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. With a faculty of 3,600, UNC-Chapel Hill was the nation’s first public university and today offers 78 bachelor’s, 112 master’s and 68 doctorate degree programs within its 14 schools.

University of North Carolina Health Care System

Owned by the state of North Carolina, UNC Health Care is a not-for-profit system that oversees a UNC Hospitals campus in Chapel Hill. The campus features an 800-bed North Carolina Memorial Hospital along with North Carolina Children’s Hospital, North Carolina Neurosciences Hospital and North Carolina Women’s Hospital.

Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools

CHCCS was established in 1909 and today operates three high schools, four middle schools, 11 elementary schools, a school for young people being treated at UNC Hospitals, and an alternative high school. More than 12,000 students are enrolled in the district, and 250 of the teachers are nationally certified.

Orange County Schools

Serving students and families in northern Orange County is Orange County Schools, which has seven elementary schools, three middle schools, two high schools and an alternative school. Administrators say the district’s curricular and extra-curricular activities promote academic, emotional, physical and social development of all students.

Orange County Government

Situated in the hills of the North Carolina Piedmont is Orange County, a community that encompasses 400 square miles of rolling farms and forest. More than 30 Orange County boards and commissions oversee efforts in award-winning programs such as child support enforcement, watershed protection and solid waste management.

Town of Chapel Hill

Spanning 21.1 square miles and serving 59,000 residents is the Town of Chapel, whose 700 employees take care of 14 departments. Town workers help maintain 165 miles of roads, 45 miles of sidewalks, 13 miles of on-street bicycle facilities, 350 acres of parks and 14 miles of greenways.

Aramark Food & Support Services

Involved in the food industry for many decades, Aramark Food & Support Services uses an array of resources and expertise to cultivate dining experiences and create fresh dishes for consumers. The company utilizes environmentally friendly policies that support sustainability and is an industry leader in promoting healthy eating.

University of North Carolina Physicians Network

More than 220 physicians belong to UNCPN, representing 40 practices that deliver a full range of primary care and specialty services to residents in 12 counties throughout North Carolina. UNCPN doctors use strategies like education, anticipatory guidance and strategic medical interventions to care for individuals and families.
