Kannapolis is home to one of North Carolina's cinematic treasures: The Gem Theatre, which is one of the oldest single-screen movie theatre in continuous operation today.
The theater was reduced to ashes in a fire soon after it was built in the 1930s, but was rebuilt in 1948 and has been open ever since, becoming the spot generations of area residents have gone to see first-run films.
Today, the 900-seat old-style moviehouse shows first-run movies and is one of only a few movie theatres that offers balcony seating.
The Gem is also home to the Modern Film Fest, which represents Kannapolis, Cabarrus County and the Charlotte metro region with a showcase of independent films of all genres, from a diverse field of filmmakers.
