Given the Southwest’s previous track record of space pioneering, it’s no wonder the first commercial spaceport was built in New Mexico. Spaceport America is a port in Las Cruces designed for launching and landing space shuttles.
The spaceport’s runway was dedicated in October of 2010 as the Governor Bill Richardson Spaceway, named after the governor responsible for approving the construction of this revolutionary establishment. The facility is state owned, however private companies pay a fee to use the launchpad.
Hard hat tours are available for visitors, as well as guided bus tours, giving visitors the opportunity to view and experience the spaceport first hand.
