Skateboarding
Fulfilling Muskogee’s need for a skate park on the east side of the city, Midland Valley Skate Park, completed in April 2015, is now open to the public. The $250,000 skate park covers more than 9,000 square feet and is part of Robinson Park, which includes such amenities as a playground, sprayground, basketball courts and walking trail. Designed by Native Skateparks LLC, Midland Valley Skate Park features a deep bowl, small obstacles, stairs and a pool block.
Bicycling
Cyclists can now feel safer than ever on Muskogee roads, thanks to the city’s new bike lanes that cover approximately 5.5 miles. Centennial Trail is also a popular cycling destination, comprising three sections in the southwestern portion of the city. Centennial North covers 3.5 miles from North 40th Street to North Main Street, while the 2-mile Centennial South trail extends from downtown’s 4th Street to 32nd Street. The Love-Hatbox Sports Complex Loop connects the northern and southern sections of the trail and covers 3.5 miles.
Playground
Open since April 2015, Honor Heights Park’s new playground includes several slides, musical toys, climbing apparatus and wheelchair-accessible ramps. As a Playcore NatureGrounds National Demonstration Site, the playground has natural elements that blend with the rest of the park, such as “planting pockets” located near play areas, entrances, pathways and boundaries.
Park
Muskogee’s 19-acre Spaulding Park is one of the area’s top spots for outdoor recreation, featuring basketball courts, tennis courts, a swimming facility, a playground, a multi-purpose trail, a fishing dock, picnic areas and a gazebo surrounded by a lake. Dating back more than 100 years, the park is also home to some of the city’s first publicly planted trees.
Swimming
In warm weather months, Muskogee residents can cool off at River Country Family Water Park and Muskogee Swim and Fitness Center. Located at the Love-Hatbox Sports Complex, River Country includes an interactive water playground for young children, a sand playground, a 100,000-gallon leisure pool, water slides, a lazy river, volleyball courts and a concessions stand. With a six-lane, 25-meter swimming pool, Muskogee Swim and Fitness Center is an ideal place to swim laps, take swimming lessons or participate in water aerobics. The facility also has a weight room and an aerobics studio. Group fitness classes and personal training services are available.
