Four Seasons of Outdoor Recreation Await in Meadville
From snow tubing to cross-country skiing and skating in the winter to golf, fishing and water sports in the summer, fitness and fun are always readily available. And when the weather doesn’t cooperate, the Meadville Area Recreation Complex and the Meadville Area Family YMCA also provide indoor opportunities. The abundance of natural glacier lakes in the county, including the first and second largest in Pennsylvania – Conneaut Lake and Canadohta Lake -- fishing tournaments, thousands of acres of game lands for hunting, and the area’s 15 golf courses are just a few of the area's assets. Historic Crawford County is also home to Conneaut Lake Park with its Blue Streak wooden roller coaster, the nation’s sixth oldest. And the 11-mile-long Ernst Bike Trail provides a healthy way to cover the distance from Meadville to Conneaut Lake. Those seeking a faster pace head to Avalanche Xpress to snow tube and experience the Thrill @ the Hill at the Whispering Pines Golf Course in Meadville. The snow tubing operation, in its third season in 2006, has given the facility another season of operation. Avalanche Xpress has snowmaking equipment, a sound system, lighted runs, an indoor arcade and a clubhouse and draws anywhere from 8,000 to 15,000 from December until March. The seven-story, 900-foot hill is popular with all ages. On the nights when the hill is nice and fast, no matter how many times you’ve been down, it’s still a lot of fun. The Meadville Area Family YMCA is a big draw for the health conscious as is the Meadville Area Recreation Complex, which offers tennis courts, baseball and soccer fields, a nature trail, sand volleyball courts, a skate park, aquatic center and ice rink.
