A calendar filled with theatrical performances, arts classes and community festivals keep Dickson County residents entertained all year.

Music

For great music performed by established and up-and-coming artists, attend the Bluff House concert series at the Bibb-White Bluff Civic Center. Singer/songwriters perform their hits and tell behind-the-scenes stories about how the tunes were written and recorded.

Visual Arts

Wall Hangers Art Gallery on Main Street in downtown Dickson displays more than 5,000 pieces of art of many media and styles, including the works of 25 local artists. The gallery also hosts painting and crafts classes, gallery shows and meet-and-greet events with artists.

Dance

For more than 25 years Amy Pilkinton and her sister, Tracy Rampaul, have been grooming budding ballerinas at Miss Amy’s School of the Arts. The regional and national award-winning dance company offers instruction for girls and boys as young as four years old in classical ballet as well as jazz, hip hop, acrobatics and tumbling, tap and cheer.

Theater

The Gaslight Dinner Theatre began entertaining Dickson County residents and visitors in 2001. The theater’s performances are at The Renaissance Center in Dickson and include a buffet meal.

The Renaissance Center is also home to the Renaissance Players community theater troupe. Since the troupe was established in 1999, it has produced more than 60 plays and musicals. The group holds open auditions for each performance, giving amateur actors a chance to hone their skills. The troupe performs four shows during the year, and past productions have included Steel Magnolias, Grease, The Sound of Music and A Christmas Carol

Festivals

Sanctioned by Kansas City Barbecue Society, the Dickson County Smoke Fest, sponsored by the Dickson County Chamber of Commerce, marks a new fall tradition in Dickson.

Held the first Saturday in May, Old Timers Day is a Dickson County institution. For more than 50 years, residents and visitors have gathered to celebrate the county’s history and heritage with a parade; live bluegrass, country and gospel music; food vendors; crafts and games for kids; and a Miss Old Timers Pageant.

The White Bluff Main Street Festival each October in White Bluff celebrates the community with a day of food, arts and crafts vendors, and music by local bands.

Held each August, the Charlotte Festival in Charlotte begins with a parade through the center of town, with the downtown square hosting food vendors, kids’ carnival games, dancing and live music.

Hosted by the Crossroads Church, the annual Apple Butter Festival and fundraiser in White Bluff has become a Dickson County favorite. Church members produce more than 100 pints of apple butter in preparation for the festival. The festival also features a display of antique farm equipment, games, food vendors and live music.

The Renaissance Center has something for everyone. I am still very excited we have it in Dickson County.
