Maybe it’s the flaky‚ buttery crust. Or perhaps it’s all the juicy‚ mouth-watering fruit. Whatever the reason‚ there’s something special about a Tootie Pie.
“People always say there’s some thing different about our pies‚” says Jeff Bailey‚ vice president of corporate development for the Tootie Pie Co. in Boerne. “They’re handmade from scratch with no preservatives.”
Tootie Pie Co. was started by Ruby Lorraine “Tootie” Feagan in the early 1980s when she began baking and selling pies from her home in Medina‚ Texas.
In 1985‚ Feagan was offered a job cooking for a corporate hunting lodge near Medina‚ where she tweaked and perfected her pie recipes for lodge visitors. She later entered and won baking contests all over the Texas Hill Country and began filling orders for pie fans from New York to California.
“Tootie developed all our great pie recipes over 20 years‚ and she really perfected the crust‚ which is the secret of a great pie‚” Bailey says.
Tootie Pie Co.’s signature pie is apple‚ and it’s a whopper – a six-pound pie filled with 3.5 pounds of apples and measuring 10 inches across. Other best sellers include Tootie’s buttermilk pie‚ heavenly chocolate pie and lemon velvet pie.
In April 2007‚ Tootie’s Coconut Supreme Pie won top honors in the commercial division of the National Pie Championship spon sored by the American Pie Council and Crisco in Celebration‚ Fla. Although Feagan traded her apron for retirement in 2006‚ her daughter Bobbie and a team of dedicated employees continue to turn out her made-from-scratch pies.
“We feel we’re not just giving people a great product‚ we’re giving them an opportunity to gather‚” Bailey says. “Pie brings people together‚ and that identity is important to us.”
