Boyle County residents have access to a wealth of health-care services, including those provided by Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center, one of the most highly regarded hospitals in Kentucky.

Ephraim McDowell Health

Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center, a nonprofit, 222-bed hospital in the heart of downtown Danville, is recognized across Kentucky and the nation for the quality health care it provides to the communities it serves.  Those accolades include being named one of the Top 100 Hospitals in the nation as well as a Top Performer by The Joint Commission.

The Joint Commission has also awarded the hospital Gold Seals of Approval for total hip and total knee replacement, as well as spinal surgeries. For its part, the Ephraim McDowell Heart & Vascular Institute's team of board-certified cardiologists provides some of the most sophisticated cardiac and arterial care available in the state.

Other components of the Ephraim McDowell Health system include the OrthoSpineCenter, which features a rehabilitation gym and a rehabilitation apartment; a Diabetes & Endocrinology Center that provides individualized treatment and education programs to manage adult-onset, juvenile and pregnancy-related diabetes, as well as endocrine system conditions such as thyroid problems and pituitary irregularities; and McDowell Wellness Center, a physical fitness and rehabilitation center that offers the latest in fitness equipment, an aerobics studio and a six-lane indoor pool.

In addition, the McDowell Wellness Center encourages Danville-Boyle County residents to make time for exercise with its Get Moving initative, which took place for the first time over 10 weeks in spring 2015. Approximately 900 people participated, some as individuals and others on teams of four or more members, and each person was required to record and submit his or her minutes of activity each week. Participants were eligible for prizes, and those who completed their activity logs for at least six weeks were entered into a drawing for additional prizes.

"The initiative was designed to improve the overall health of the community and to encourage physical activity, and we were very overwhelmed and impressed with participation," says Maleena Nevels, part of the Ephraim McDowell Health system marketing and public relations team. According to Nevels, the initiative was so successful that a second, eight-week round is already in the works, and officials plan to offer the challenge twice a year going forward.

A Children's Place, a child learning and development center, provides age-specific programming to children up to 10 years of age, and Kids Can Do Pediatric Therapy Center is the only therapy center dedicated to children in south central Kentucky.

Top Cancer Care

Danville is also home to the Ephraim McDowell Commonwealth Cancer Center, part of a fully integrated, comprehensive cancer care facility on Techwood Drive that allows individuals challenged by a cancer diagnosis to remain close to home for treatment. The center aligns radiation oncology (21st Century Radiation Oncology), medical oncology and a variety of support services at one easily accessible location.

Assisted Living

Boyle County is home to several well-regarded living facilities for older adults, including McDowell Place of Danville, a spacious and comfortable independent- and assisted-living community offering daily activities, Charleston Health Care Center (a 90-bed facility with private and semi-private rooms, known for its family atmosphere), and Kindred Nursing & Rehabilitation in Danville, a 106-bed, for-profit nursing home. Baptist Homes is a private company with a reputation for hiring skilled, highly experienced nurses.
