Several big-scale revitalization projects in various stages around downtown Lincoln, NE, serve as proof of renewed interest in the area. As city leaders remain focused on continued improvements, new businesses and residents keep coming.

Basics: A new arena, renovation of the seven-block Centennial Mall, street resurfacing, and openings of several new and recently renovated buildings top the list of the most visible improvements to downtown Lincoln. Meanwhile, community leaders get attention for their efforts to make downtown Lincoln more walkable and livable. For example, Keep America Beautiful recognized the Downtown Lincoln Association's waste reduction and recycling program.

Details: About 3,600 people prefer to live within downtown Lincoln's centrally located Haymarket district, a concentration of restaurants, boutiques, bars and apartments. Haymarket also hosts a farmers market and live music events. A growing number of performance venues and festivals occur downtown, which also is the setting for The University of Nebraska – Lincoln campus. College students frequent the area's retailers, bars and its more than 100 restaurants. A 2009 study found there are more than 33,500 parking spaces in the downtown area and the need for an additional 5,000 spaces in coming years.
